Turns (ATWT often called) is an American telenovela that airs Monday through Friday on CBS.
Set in the fictional town of Oakdale, Illinois, the program debuted on April 2, 1956, at 1:30 pm EST. Before then, all series were fifteen minutes long. As the World Turns and The Edge of Night, which premiered the same day at 4:30 pm Eastern time, were the first two or thirty-minute premiere. At first, viewers did not respond to the new half-hour series, but the qualifications set out in its second year, until the first day of Nielsen in the autumn of 1958. In 1959, the show started a streak of weekly ratings wins that is not interrupted for more than twelve years. In the qualifications of the year so far, As the World Turns was the most-watched drama series from 1958 to 1978, with ten million viewers tuning in every day. At its peak, the key actors as Helen Wagner, Don MacLaughlin, Don Hastings and Eileen Fulton became nationally known. Irna Phillips created As the World Turns as a presentation of the sister to another soap opera Guiding Light.
