It has all the wit and melodic charm of The Threepenny Opera and Mahagonny social consciousness, but warmer and more musical sophistication whatsoever. It is also entirely in about 40 minutes. Some critics believe the game has been designed as a kind of poem wife Lotte Lenya, Weill’s love, given the delicacy of much of the music, it is difficult to contradict. Lenya even recorded the song in the 1950s (recording recently reissued by Sony), and is much higher, especially for the very intelligent and musical, Anne Sofie von Otter to be greeted with the text.
